about

This is a very old Christmas Carol from the 1500s. It tells a terrible story, but maybe this is the kind of song that needs to be sung again, today.

It first appeared as a song in a Nativity play performed by the Guilds in Coventry, England around 1536. It tells the story of the Feast of the Holy Innocents, of children senselessly slaughtered, sung from the perspective of the Mothers saying/singing goodbye.

This song has no basis in historical fact, but instead serves as a folkloric condemnation of violence against children. And it is again presented as such, in a time when far too many children are being killed.

lyrics

Lully, lullah, thou little tiny child
Bye bye, lully, lullay
Thou little tiny child
Bye bye, lully, lullay

O sisters too, how may we do
For to preserve this day?
This poor youngling for whom we sing
"Bye bye, lully, lullay"?

Herod the King, in his raging,
Charged he hath this day
His men of might in his own sight
All young children to slay

That woe is me, poor child, for thee
And ever morn' and May
For thy parting neither say nor sing
"Bye bye, lully, lullay"

Lully, lullah, thou little tiny child,
Bye bye, lully, lullay
Thou little tiny child,
Bye bye, lully, lullay.
